  • We had a wonderful time in Arthur, IL for the Minister's Enrichment Weekend of the BMA. Linford and I rode by train from Martinsburg, WV to Chicago, IL and rented a car to travel the three hours to Arthur. We got into Chicago on Tuesday morning but didn't need to be to Arthur for the DNI board meetings until Wed. so we took in the Chicago auto show before heading southwest. I'll try to post some pictures later. We are home now and trying to get back into the swing of things.

Lanette stayed with friends from school. She was sick a couple of days during that time. She was very ready for us to come home.

We also redid and rearranged the office for MVM recently. It is much nicer now though not everything is put back the way it needs to be yet. I'm still waiting on Linford to get me a cabinet to put supplies in. We made the waiting room into a waiting room/service work office so we now have two offices. The Service office and the Sales office. It's nice having two computers out there now. We also have hired a service/shop manager. That has helped us out temendously, especially when we are gone from home. Ben S. is a great asset to our business. I'll try to post a picture or so of the new office arrangement soon. Hopefully, I'll remember.

So that is what we've been up to lately along with the normal business and church work.

  • It's Me!

Just a note to let those of you that don't have facebook, that we are doing fine. We continue to stay busy with many things. Hopefully some pictures will come soon to let you see where we spent Labor Day weekend. Last night we spent the evening with the youth of our congregation. We played softball until it was too dark to play safely and then we played volleyball. It was rather fun to play again. I wasn't very good at either but I still managed to be on the winning team of both games. silly

Lanette started the 3rd grade this year. She complains that the work is harder this year, but she is still doing okay. I think it will just take a bit for her to get back into the swing of learning. She is already doing better than she did at the very beginning.

I am still doing childcare on Saturdays when I'm home. It's been a few weeks since they have been here so they are very happy to be together again.

  • The Power of Christ’s Words

Christ’ passionate love for the world is evident in His statements from the Cross:

    Statement One

“Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34

Do you realize that you are in need of the Father’s forgiveness?

    Statement Two

“Today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Luke 23:43

Have you realized and confessed Jesus as your personal Savior?

    Statement Three

“Woman, behold your son.” John 19:26

Jesus is concerned for us and provides for all of us.

    Statement Four

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Matthew 27:46

Jesus was forsaken so we don’t have to be.

    Statement Five

    “I thirst!” John 19:28

This personal statement reminds us that Jesus is not only God, but He also was man. Jesus identifies with our needs.

    Statement Six

    “It is finished!” John 19:30

Jesus paid for our sins, and sin’s control over our lives is broken!

    Statement Seven

“Into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Luke 23:46

You can entrust your life into God’s hands.

If you are reading this today and you’ve never committed your life to Jesus Christ, would you click [Knowing God link] and confess Him as Your Savior and Lord?

  • A Counterfeit Gospel

I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel. —Galatians 1:6

I watched a very famous preacher being interviewed awhile ago on television. When the topic of sin came up, the preacher said, “I never talk about sin. I never use the word ‘sin,’ because people already know they are sinners. I am not here to beat people down. I just want to lift them up.”

However, I don’t think that most people know they are sinners. And our job is not just to lift people up; it is to point them to Christ. So we have to use the word “sin.”

There is a counterfeit gospel. The apostle Paul wrote to the churches of Galatia, “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel” (Galatians 1:6). Just because someone uses the term “gospel” doesn’t mean he or she is referring to the genuine gospel. Even if someone claims they are preaching the gospel, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the real gospel. For the gospel to be genuine, certain things must be in place. And one of those things is the acknowledgement that everyone has sinned. As 1 John 1:8 says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

The only solution for our sin being removed is the cross. If the cross is not proclaimed, then it is not the gospel. Any proper presentation of the gospel includes the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Paul wrote to the believers at Corinth, “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2).

Whenever there is the genuine, there also will be the counterfeit. And the devil has his fake version of just about everything—even the gospel.

  • Genuine Imitations

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy . . . having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!—2 Timothy 3:1–2, 5

An oxymoron basically is a figure of speech that combines contradictory terms, like “jumbo shrimp,” “virtual reality,” “friendly fire,” and “found missing.” Then there is one of my favorites: “fresh frozen.” You might go into a restaurant and ask, “Is this fish fresh?”

“It is fresh frozen,” the server will say.

“Well, is it fresh?” you will ask again.

“It is fresh frozen.” Why don’t they just tell you that it is old?

Then there are other classic oxymorons, like “exact estimate” and “airline food.” We can add “genuine imitation” to that list as well.

The idea of genuine imitation is what Jesus conveys in a story known as the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares. Prior to Jesus’ return, the devil effectively will flood the market with cheap imitations of the real thing. In fact, there will be so many genuine imitations that people will have a difficult time distinguishing the true from the false.

Why will the devil do this? Because it is effective. When it is revealed that a so-called Christian has been living a double life that is a complete contradiction of his or her profession of faith, some people might think, Well, that person is a hypocrite, so I am not going to be a Christian either. I am going to turn my back on this. They are all just a bunch of phonies. They fell for the devil’s trap.

So according to Jesus’ parable, there will be many in the last days who believe—and many who will fake belief. They will sit side by side in the same churches. They will sing the same songs. They will read the same Bibles. They will say the same things, to some degree. But in reality, these people are never really believers to begin with.
